2009 Education Issue Updates:
Tuition Freeze
The Kansas Board of Regents has unanimously approved a plan that would freeze state university tuition costs for Kansas residents for the 2009-2010 academic year.
House Bill 2095
The House Appropriations Committee heard testimony of House Bill 2095 which would allow school districts to levy a property tax of up to two mills for the next two years to pay for insurance and utility costs, or to pay for municipal bonds issued by cities.
Efficiency in Technical Education
The Legislature is taking steps to improve technical education across the state. This would allow technical education institutions to receive direct input from the business world, enhancing technical education curriculum to include real world issues facing the business community.
Sales Tax Holiday on School Supplies
The House Taxation Committee began hearings on House Bill 2328. If passed, this bill would expand the state’s sales tax exemptions to include a sales tax holiday for the purchasing of school supplies.
Higher Education bills approved by House
A variety of Higher Education bills were approved on the House floor this week and will now advance to the Senate for their consideration. These bills involved both Board of Reagents and Post-Secondary Technical Institutions (More information...)
Forced Consolidation of Schools
The Kansas House successfully defeated a proposal that would have significantly harmed small, rural schools. Had it passed, House Bill 2103 proposed to reduce funding for school districts with less than 200 square miles and less than 200 students. (More information...)
