Jana Mackey bill passes House
February 21, 2010 Update
House Bill 2517 passed the House this week. This bill will help the justice system better track domestic violence cases. The bill was introduced in response to the 2008 murder of Lawrence resident Jana Mackey.
House Bill 2517 would allow judges to determine whether crimes are linked to domestic violence and then tag them accordingly onto legal documents connected to any criminal act involving an intimate or domestic relationship.

K2 bill passes both House and Senate
February 7, 2010 Update
On Wednesday, the House followed the Senate in passing a bill that will add three chemicals to the state’s list of illegal drugs. Two of the chemicals, called “K2" or “Spice”, are added to herbs and smoked like marijuana. The substance is typically sold as incense. The third is a form of the drug Ecstasy. Under this legislation, it will become illegal to possess or sell those chemicals, just as it is for marijuana. No other state has banned this substance. Read the full Neighborhood News Update...
Proposal repeals some licensing requirements for teen drivers
February 7, 2010 Update
Many schools are eliminating driver education due to budget constraints. As a result, the House Committee on Transportation has been forced to consider repealing some previous teen driver licensing requirements. House Bill 2483 repeals the requirement that 15-year-olds must complete Driver’s Education before obtaining a restricted license (the bill still requires at least 25 hours of adult supervised driving). “InsureNet” would protect drivers
January 25, 2010 Update
The House Transportation Committee heard testimony in support of a new, statewide system for tracking uninsured vehicles. The system, InsureNet, has already been installed in several states. The system would take pictures of the rear of vehicles and process the license information through a national intranet system within one minute. If the identified vehicle is uninsured, the owner will receive a citation in the mail. Read the full Neighborhood News Update...

In an effort to lessen the impact of reduced funding, the Department of Corrections prioritized budget cuts based on their impact to public safety.
